Finding the most effective way to remove unwanted tattoos or permanent makeup has been the goal of many specialized companies and experts around the world for many years. Currently, the best system is both the nanosecond Q switch Nd. YAG laser and its more advanced version, the picosecond laser. The Tattoo Zone laser center in Krnov has these devices.
Ivo Výboch:
“Many years ago, I noticed an increased interest from clients who were dissatisfied with their tattoos for various reasons and started thinking about redoing or covering them up. This method did not always seem to be the best. The tattoo usually had to darken significantly.
As tattoo artists, we started testing various chemical methods of tattoo removal&ndquo; with various “removers” , but they were not effective.
That's why I decided to equip my studio with a tattoo removal laser.
I have sixteen years of experience with this technology, having replaced several nanosecond Q switch lasers.“
HOW A NEODYMIUM LASER WORKS:
To understand the principle of how a laser works, we first need to understand the principle of the tattoo itself.
When applying a tattoo and PMU, the pigment is introduced with a needle into a specific layer of the skin - the dermis. The body considers this pigment to be a foreign substance, but is unable to get rid of it naturally. The molecules of tattoo and PMU colors are simply too large for this. The body then reacts by wrapping the pigment with collagen, thereby fixing it in the skin.
As tattoos and PMUs have become increasingly popular, the need to modify or completely remove them has logically increased. Q switch lasers are considered by dermatologists to be the most effective and safest way to remove tattoos and PMUs. They do not cause burns, hypopigmentation, or scarring of the tissue.
The Q-Switch Nd YAG laser is an intelligent non-invasive laser device that generates high-intensity light pulses. Each pulse lasts just a billionth of a second (nanosecond laser) and one trillionth of a second for a picosecond laser. This is a process where photoacoustic and thermal energy is directed at the pigments, which are then broken down into microparticles. These broken particles are then naturally eliminated by the lymphatic system of the human body. This process usually takes 6 to 8 weeks, during which the tattoo gradually fades.
Lasers work in different wavelengths and frequencies. Each of them is designed for a different color and layer (depth) of the skin. For example, black and other dark pigments are best removed because they respond to all wavelengths.
NUMBER OF SESSIONS, CONTRAINDICATIONS, PAIN, CARE
Ivo Výboch:
The number of sessions depends on many factors.
“For complete tattoo removal, we expect 5 to 10 procedures, but it can be more than 10, or even less than 5. If If the existing tattoo only needs to be lightened because it is covered by a new tattoo, 3 to 5 treatments will probably be enough.”
It depends on the age and health of the client, the skin type, age and location of the tattoo, as well as how well the tattoo is done and what pigment it is made with. Older (10 years or more) and amateur tattoos with poor quality ink are best removed.
The tattoo is removed in layers. Therefore, many more sessions are needed to remove saturated areas or contours than to remove areas that are only lightly shaded. The pigment is absorbed much better in areas that are more blood-rich. Removing a tattoo on your fingers or toes will therefore take longer than, say, your chest.
Ivo Výboch:
“I don't want it to sound like a cliché, but clients who lead a healthy lifestyle are at an advantage. An immune system that is not burdened by various toxins, such as alcohol and nicotine, then works properly and can fully devote itself to the broken down pigment. I therefore recommend that my clients get enough exercise and sleep, drink plenty of fluids and lightly massage the lasered area at least twice a day“
As for the pain, it is most often compared to the pain of the tattoo itself. However, it can be significantly reduced by cooling with ice-cold air (-20°C to -30°C) or a cooling gel. Perceiving laser pulses can be compared to “shooting a rubber band through the skin.”
PERMANENT MAKE-UP REMOVAL
Do you want to help your clients?
“In our practice, we increasingly encounter clients who need help with unsuccessful PMU from other salons or who are eager for a change and want to have their older PMU corrected with a so-called cover-up.
If the skin is saturated with pigment to the point that there is no room for new pigment or the existing pigment would show through, it is necessary to use a laser to lighten or completely remove the PMU.”
How many treatments are needed?
“It is very individual, usually 1 to 4 sessions after 6-8 weeks, it also depends on many other factors, just like with the removal of a classic tattoo”
Conclusion - Ivo Výboch:
“In my many years of practice as a tattoo artist, I have seen a lot. Failed tattoos, failed alterations and permanent make-up. We have been working with lasers for 17 years and have gained a lot of experience during this time. If you need our help or want to help your clients, you can use our free consultation“

Although the fashion for tattoos and permanent makeup continues, there are still clients who have had enough of it and want to remove it. Many believe that it is not possible, that such a process will leave scars, burns, hypo- or hyperpigmentation. These are unnecessary concerns. When choosing the right method, there is no such danger.

Laser tattoo removal is very commonly used today. Ivo Výboch, who has 15 years of experience with lasers, told us exclusively how the removal process works, what the healing process is like, and the consequences.
How did you get into tattoo removal? And what is needed for this job?
It's been 15 years. Back then, we dealt with a lot of coverups and retouching. Previously, tattoos were ground out in medical facilities with a high-frequency “grinder“, but at that time I found out that laser devices for tattoo removal were being developed. So I researched and bought my first laser. I wanted to be one step ahead, not only dealing with tattoos, but also their removal or lightening for future retouching. Of course, we need a laser device for this, but also a hygiene permit and a lot of experience.
How is tattoo removal done? And how does the laser work?
It's similar to getting a tattoo. You sit in a chair, you get protective glasses, and we may use a numbing cream. After the tattoo is removed, the area is cooled with air or a cooling gel. The laser we use (Q switch ND yag laser – neodymium laser) works by firing its beam at intervals. It penetrates the skin to the pigment without damaging it or leaving scars, and when it comes into contact with the pigment, it explodes. The lymphatic system then carries it away. Healing then takes 6-8 weeks, when the body works to carry the pigment away. After about 2 months, we can continue.
What should the client prepare for before the procedure? Is it similar to before a tattoo?
The client should definitely not come under the influence of alcohol or other addictive substances. Pregnant women should also not come, if it comes to a tattoo on the stomach, as well as epileptics and oncology patients, who should discuss everything with their doctor. The client should definitely be calm, well-fed, and rested. It's actually similar to a tattoo.
Are there any risks, such as burns, etc.?
If someone uses other lasers, of course there is a risk of burns or scars. But you need to use the right laser that will not damage the skin or its pigmentation. A drop of blood may appear, if someone has thin skin, but it will heal and a small scab will form, which also helps remove the pigment. In that case, it is advisable to use healing creams like with tattoos. I recommend aloe vera cream to everyone, which is beneficial for the skin.
Can all tattoos be removed? Regardless of age, color, or location?
Yes. But the older the tattoo, or the amateurish one, the better it is removed. Professional tattoos require more sessions. Amateur tattoos or permanent makeup can be removed in 2-3 sessions. It also depends on the pigment, dark pigments are best removed, i.e. black, brown, etc. Pigments similar to the skin, such as orange/beige, are difficult to remove. Tattoos in critical places, such as the inside of the mouth, can be removed, the exception being the white of the eye, which simply cannot be removed.
Why do people seek laser?
For example, if they have the names of their former counterparts written on them, or sometimes they just don't agree with the theme of the tattoo. A large group is also those who have their tattoos removed for work. Finally, there are many who want to re-tattoo an old tattoo, and the laser will help them lighten it.
Is it possible to remove a tattoo 100%? And do scars remain after the laser, for example?
Yes, it is possible, but it takes patience and time. Sometimes, when only a shadow of the original tattoo remains, it will even remove itself. Scars will not remain if the correct procedure is followed and an experienced specialist is chosen.
Is it possible that someone cannot (for example, for health reasons) undergo laser tattoo removal? And what should they do in such a case if they really want to remove the tattoo?
I would always recommend consulting a doctor. If there is a possibility that the health condition will improve, it is definitely worth waiting. However, there is an option to remove a tattoo without a laser. In medical facilities, excision can be performed under general anesthesia, but this leaves scars.

Artist Ivo Výboch from Krnov painted only pictures until 1992. Then he accidentally came across a German tattoo magazine. This event completely changed his life.
“I knew and felt right away that tattooing was something I wanted to do. Tattooing is still an art form. A tattoo needle serves me just as well as a pencil or a brush. I am able to create images on human skin, and that fascinates me,“ says Výboch in the documentary film Tattoo Zone 30 Years, which was made about him and the people around his tattoo studio by director and cameraman Petr Hrubeš. The film had its public premiere at the Kofola club in Krnov at the celebration of the thirty years of the oldest tattoo parlor in Krnov.
The documentary also features talented budding tattoo artists Sára Výbochová and Šimon Výboch, who followed in their father's footsteps. A number of other fellow tattoo artists and tattooed clients describe in the documentary how Ivo Výboch helped them find their way to professional tattooing. For example, the deputy chief of the Silesian Hospital reveals in the film that he has been getting tattoos for twenty years thanks to his friendship with Výboch. The doctor also presents the tattoos of his son, who had many pictures all over his body even before his high school graduation.
Don't get a tattoo
Výboch's Krnov salon Tattoo Zone, founded in 1992, is one of the oldest not only in Krnov, but in the entire Czech Republic. Ivo Výboch became a well-known figure in his industry not only as a Czech pioneer of professional tattooing and a disseminator of education, but above all he drew attention to himself with the artistic quality and originality of his motifs. It is no wonder that tattoo fans organized such a grand birthday party in Kofola to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Výboch's Tattoo Zone salon.
Aneta Cibulková was among the well-wishers, who presented her epic book Don't Get Tattooed Stupidly for the first time. “I approached Ivo when the crowdfunding campaign was still underway, which helped pay for the publication of the book. I hoped that the topic would suit him, because Ivo could stand up for the professional part of my book. It is intended for those who want to get a good tattoo. I am not saying which topic is the right one for them, but I am presenting them with the whole range of processes, how the choice should be made. How to think about a tattoo, how to choose a tattoo artist or what to do if something goes wrong. The book can also be a starting point for novice tattoo artists,“ said Aneta Cibulková, who included selected works by 21 selected Czech and Slovak tattoo artists in her book. She also mentions frightening massacres such as tattoos with a pin from a bulletin board or a fork in a criminal's kitchen.
A story from a trade
When Ivo Výboch started thirty years ago, clients demanded that their pictures be hidden under their clothes. They didn't want to have problems, for example, in their employment. Today, society fully accepts tattoos, so on the contrary, they make tattoos as visible as possible. Another huge advance in the industry was the invention of the wireless tattoo machine a few years ago. There is a funny story associated with the founding of the Tattoo Zone studio in Krnov: how Ivo Výboch went to the trade licensing office to announce that he wanted to make a living from tattooing. “The ladies at the tradesmen looked at me with their mouths open, as if I wanted something unreal from them. As if I were telling them I wanted to be an astronaut,“ laughs Ivo Výboch, remembering the wide-eyed office workers.
In the documentary, he also presents other related fields such as permanent make-up with the thinnest needles or removing outdated and unsuccessful images from the skin with a laser. Or his invention: a tattoo of a goat that you jump over in the gym. He also explains how the image is lightened for a cover-up tattoo, or repairs and alterations. The most common request from clients is to remove the names and dates of former counterparts.
In addition to tattoos and tattoo removal, Tattoo Zone is also dedicated to education. He organizes courses in piercing, tattooing and, in collaboration with the cosmetic studio In-Visage by Markéta Tichavská, also permanent make-up. Výboch guides his budding colleagues not to copy their idols and teachers, but to find their own style. He himself has never put down his palette and brushes. In his free time, he also develops his creative artistic potential on canvas.
“When I didn't enjoy listening at school, I drew various comics in my diaries and notebooks. That left me with the idea that I sometimes want to create only according to my own style. My classmates remember my painting at class reunions. They also made a chronicler out of me in the military,“ Ivo Výboch looks back on the past in the film Tatto Zone 30 Years. And the future? He would like to choose fine work with motifs that he personally enjoys and is interested in. He would like to paint more on canvas and organize an exhibition of his paintings. “If I had to have a vision for the future, it would be for me, Sára and Šimon to work together,“ Výboch revealed his family vision.
A gift for a dog shelter
“Ivo is, above all, a great guy. In the ten years we have been cooperating, we have never had a fight. I would put my hand in a fire for him,“ confided in the film another well-known tattoo artist from Krnov, Olda Pavelek, one of the faces of Tatto Zone.
The birthday party in Kofola was seen by tattoo artists and their clients as an opportunity for charity. Right on stage during the birthday party, the tattoo artists painted four paintings that were auctioned off for 35,000 crowns. With this money, tattoo fans bought heaps of kibble and food, and set off to Opava to please the dogs in the shelter. “The charity part of the celebration was taken care of by my life partner Markéta Tichavská and her daughter Sára. I would like to thank the girls for myself and for the animals," concluded Ivo Výboch.
